Launch Day: Saturday 11th July — Courtfield Gardens, Trowbridge

We’re delighted to announce that Courtfield House officially launches on Saturday 11th July.

Part of the Courtfield Gardens development, this exceptional collection of 20 beautifully crafted one to four bedroom homes sits in the heart of Trowbridge, Wiltshire — a scheme where contemporary living meets a genuine sense of place, in a town rich in history yet perfectly connected for modern life. Excellent transport links, a vibrant community, and outstanding schools are all close to home.

But at the very heart of Courtfield Gardens stands a home with a story unlike any other.

The Story of Courtfield House

Grade II* listed and one of Trowbridge’s most significant historic buildings, Courtfield House carries over 260 years of history within its walls — shaped by the ambitions of the Industrial Revolution, the artistry of the Arts and Crafts movement, and decades of life as a much-loved school.

Built around 1762 by John Cockes, a prominent local clothier at the heart of Trowbridge’s rise as one of England’s great centres of woollen cloth production, the house was constructed in Flemish bond brickwork, following a double-pile plan — elegant reception rooms to the front, working workshops to the rear.

Over the next century, the house grew with the family’s fortunes: a workshop added by the 1770s, rebuilt attics by 1780, and elegant canted bay windows introduced to the principal rooms in the mid-19th century.

Between 1860 and 1887, Courtfield House was transformed. The old workshops were absorbed into the home, the garden elevation took on striking Arts and Crafts detailing, and a coach house and loggia were added — along with a beautiful room of light timber-framing infilled with herringbone brickwork.

The house stayed in the hands of woollen manufacturers until the mid-20th century, before beginning a new chapter in the 1970s as Roundstone Preparatory School — serving the local community, and its dancers, for over 40 years until closing in 2012.

Today, Courtfield House begins its next chapter — sensitively restored and reimagined as four unique homes. To live here is to become part of a story that stretches back more than 260 years, and continues still.
