The Hawthorns, Great Somerford, Wiltshire
The Hawthorns is a collection of nine beautifully crafted homes ranging from three to four bedrooms. This exclusive development can be found in the historic village of Great Somerford, set in the picturesque south Cotswolds.
Great Somerford is home to Britain’s first allotments. Stephen Demainbray, rector 1799–1854 and Chaplain to King George III, asked the King to spare part of his parish from the enclosures of 1809. The Free Gardens, a field of about 6 acres in the south of the village on Dauntsey Road, 500m from The Hawthorns, were given to the poor agricultural workers of the parish to provide them with the opportunity for fresh food, and they are still cultivated by the locals some 200 years later free of charge, as laid down in the original act of parliament. The new development road name will be Demainbray Close in honour of his memory.
The larger hilltop town of Malmesbury, officially recognised as England’s oldest borough, lies five miles to the north of The Hawthorns. Malmesbury boasts buildings of golden Cotswold stone and beautiful river walks, and is famous for its ancient Abbey and elaborate 15th century Market Cross. The town has an extensive range of amenities including independent shops, a Waitrose supermarket, charming cosy pubs, friendly cafes, regular farmers’ markets, and a busy local events schedule. The town provides a wide array of education options to choose from including Malmesbury Secondary which has an ‘Outstanding’ rating from Oftsed.
Days out can be spent at the Cotswold Water Park, an area of over 40 square miles and 180 lakes. These stunning wetlands host tens of thousands of breeding and watering birds and are an ideal destination for watching wildlife all year round. Swindon’s designer outlet can be found 13 miles from the development, with over 90 stores to choose from including Nike, John Lewis and Tommy Hilfiger.
The Hawthorns is ideally located just four miles from junction 17 of the M4, providing excellent commuting to the major centres of Bath, Bristol, Swindon and London. The nearest railway station can be found seven miles away in Chippenham, with a mainline train service to London Paddington every 20 minutes enabling a commute to London possible in approximately 75 minutes.
Great Somerford is home to a popular primary and pre-school. Malmesbury and Chippenham offer a range of secondary schools and high education premises.
